Founded in 1832, Americus is the county seat of Sumter County. Americus – the masculine version of America – was named for the western continents, which in turn were named for Amerigo Vespucci.

Vintage architecture in Americus can be seen in the Windsor Hotel, located in the business district of the city. This massive brick structure, built in 1892, occupies an entire city block.
