Metter, the county seat of Candler County, originally incorporated in Bulloch County on August 17, 1903. Later, the state legislature redrew the county boundaries, and Metter joined Candler County.

Metter’s beginning, like those of many other small cities in Georgia, depended on the railroad. The city grew up solely as a rail stop. In fact, as legend has it, the city’s name honors a railroad official’s wife. Thankful that he’d “met her” in the town, the official memorialized their marriage with the city’s naming.

Metter maintains two locations listed on the National Register of Historic Places – the Candler County courthouse and the South Metter Residential Historic District, a neighborhood comprised of numerous late 19th and early 20th century homes. Also of interest is Old Lake Church, one of the oldest Primitive Baptist Churches in existence.
