Initially called Odell’s Crossing to honor an area landowner, Oakwood years later served as a regular fuel stop for steam locomotives, which then were powered by burning oak wood. The community thrived thanks to the railroad and expanded to other industries such as brick and bottle production.

Today, Oakwood is still very much a vibrant city. In 1998, city residents took serious steps toward developing their transportation infrastructure. The city also has ambitious plans for the future through its Oakwood 2030 project. The project details impressive development changes centered on providing residents with recreational areas, bike trails, shopping areas and an active business district.
