FOUNTAIN FLORIDA MORTGAGE AND CITY DATA
The Fountain community north of Youngstown was homestead by Morgan Thrasher. It was named for his son Fountain, in 1902. A. B. Steele, owner of the Bay Line Railroad, constructed the Enterprise Lumber Company in Fountain in 1905. He built the Bay Line to the community to serve his saw mill. It was extended to Panama City in 1908. Edward Fletcher Spann erected a turpentine still at Fountain in 1904. In partnership with W.C. Sherman they purchased the saw mill in the 1920’s. Sherman bought out the Spann interests. The saw mill was purchased by the German-American Lumber Company in 1914, but was seized in World War I to become American Lumber Company.
The community was connected with the Millville Mill by a railroad log-line constructed by German-American Lumber Company. Sherman purchased the mill with Spann Brothers as partners in 1918. He bought our Spann interest shortly after. Thrasher opened a general store at Fountain in 1904.
Logs for sawing into lumber were bought in by rail to nearby Spruce Creek, then conveyed into the mill for sawing into lumber. The mill burned in 1917 destroying one million feet of lumber. The mill burned again in 1926, and was not rebuilt. Employees moved to other mills for work and Fountain became a small community on Highway 231.
